Swamp Cooler Leak Repair Guide

When you are going to repair any swamp cooler leaks, you will need to look at the different issues that could be causing a leak.  There are some things that might cause a swamp cooler to leak, and there are ways to fix them.

Items Needed:

  • plastic gloves
  • acrylic caulk
  • screwdriver
  • wire brush
  • wrench
  • pliers

First: Beginning

Put on the plastic gloves.  Take the side panels with the padding off the cooler.  Remember that you may need to turn on the cooler more than once to determine the cause of the leak.  However, when you are attempting the repair, you should make sure that it is both off and unplugged.

Second: Copper Lines

The copper or main line will be where the water comes into the swamp cooler.  This will be held in place with a compression nut.  Use the wrench to make sure that the nut is properly tightened.  Turn the water on to the cooler.  If it is still dripping out, then check the washer.  Turn the water back off.  Take the water line off by making the compression nut loose.  Look at the inside area of the compression nut and the washer.  If the washer is looking worn, then it should be replaced.  If there are deposits from the water on the inside area of the nut, then remove them with a screwdriver or the wire brush.

Third: Leaky Bottom

There may be a possibility that the leak is from a cracked reservoir tray.  To see if this is the issue, turn on the water.  Look to see if there is any water coming from the bottom area of your cooler.  A cooler with a reservoir tray that is cracked will become empty pretty quick.  Drain the water that is left and repair the areas that are cracked.  The acrylic caulk will be perfect for this job.  One other reason that the cooler may leak at the bottom is an overflow pipe that is not properly positioned.  Make sure that it is in the correct place according to the drain hole.  If it is not, then use the pliers to correct this.

Fourth: Leaky Pads

Leaky pads can be due to a number of different things.  The first thing to do is make sure that the pads are fitted correctly.  If they are loose, then the water will be deflected.  There are some with metallic mesh that secures the pads.  The mesh will be attached at the side panels by screws.  If the mesh is not steady, then the padding could protrude in areas and cause splashing.  Make sure the screws holding the mesh are tight using a screwdriver.  Check the body of the cooler where the pads get inserted.  They may have water deposits.  If this is the case, then use the wire brush to remove them.

Fifth: Float Valve

One key to a functional cooler is ensuring that it is not overflowing.  This job falls back on the float valve.  Make sure that the arm for the valve is positioned correctly.  It can sometimes be deflected.  Use the wrench for tightening the nut for the float valve.  The arm or the float shouldn’t in any way be bent.  If it is, then the float valve needs replacing.

Repairing Bathroom Roof Vents

The purpose that bathroom roof vents serve is that of helping to keep your home free of mildew and mold.  However, they will show signs of wear over a period of time.  Some of the things that you can do to prevent this are to know when it needs to be replaced, and and when it just needs fixed.  Knowing what the difference in the two is can save you tons of money.

Items Needed:

  • Paper
  • pen or pencil
  • new motor
  • screwdriver
  • vacuum with attachment
  • step ladder

First: Dead Motor

If the fan that is in your vent doesn’t work anymore, then you may have to switch out the motor.  This is something that is not hard, and requires few tools to do.  Make sure that the vent switch is off.  Set up and climb the ladder.  Take the cover of the vent off.  Pull down the cover.  Push the springs and release the cover from the housing.

Second: Vacuum

After the cover is off, you will want to keep it in a safe place that is near to you.  Take the vacuum and remove all the dirt and dust that has built up.  This will allow you to see what the model number of the unit is.  Knowing the model number will allow you to get the right one to replace it.  After you have removed the dust and dirt, you will need to write the model number on a piece of paper.

Third: Remove

Now it is time to unplug the motor and remove it from the support plate.  Make sure that you have removed the blower as well.  There may be the need to remove a screw or pry it out.  If you break it during the process, do not worry it is easy to replace and inexpensive to buy.  Make sure that you take out he screw or tab that is keeping it in before tipping the plate out of its housing.

Fourth: New Motor

Make sure that you have the model number with you when you go to order a new motor.  This will ensure that you get a replacement that will work with your current set up.

Fifth: Install

Take the motor out by removing all the screws holding it in.  After you have the old motor out, put the new one in.  Attach the new motor to the blower and put all the screws back where they go.  This will make sure that the motor is properly held in place.

Proper window installation

When you are replacing a window there are many things that you have to do in order to make sure that the window fits in the opening properly.  Proper installation of a window can mean many things to a home.  Even though you can install the window yourself you have to make sure that it is installed properly so that nothing gets in and the window does not fall of the opening.  Here are some things that you need to keep in mind the next time you’re trying to replace the windows in your house so you get the window installed properly and nothing else happens.

The first thing that you need to do is take up the old window.  This can be done fairly easy depending on if you want to break the glass or the old window.  If it does not matter to you the best recommendation to remove the old window is take up the glass first.  Taking out the window is the simplest thing that you can do is on as you make sure that you pull the nails from the side of the window before completely removing the window from the opening.  Once you have the window out you have to make sure that there’s no water damage are on the frame.  If there’s water damage are on the frame you’re going to have to fix the window frame before you install the new window.

One thing that you have to do before you install the new window is to make sure that it opens and closes.  You want to do this to make sure that there’s nothing wrong with the window before you install what.  Once you know that the window works properly without any malfunctions you can go ahead and install it into the opening with the old window was.

Once you get the window installed you want to make sure that there are no drafts or anything else around the window.  You want to make sure that the window is completely sealed so that you do not let any wind or any of the elements into the wall.  This could be very bad if water is allowed to penetrate through the seal of the window and get down into the wall.

Kitchen Investment Strategy

When it comes to home owning, much like anything else, you want a good return on your investment. So very few people anymore, as opposed to our grandparent’s time, retire in the first home they bought. Odds are a person is going to move, probably a few times or more. Kitchen renovating or remodeling can be a very wise investment as far as home value goes. It will indeed be a costly endeavor, bit it need not break the bank. There are more than a few things to take into account though. The present structure, architectural factors, plumbing and wiring are just the start to the things a home owner needs to take into consideration.

Kitchen renovation is by far one the most preferred ways of increasing a home’s value. In that single renovation the home can be transformed into a dream home the whole family can enjoy and appreciate. There can be some really large expenses in this one room though. Flooring, cabinetry, the counter top not to mention the appliances can make the kitchen an expensive room to transform. A little research, a little budgeting and clear conceptualization of what you want will go a long way in making this whole process easier.

Cabinets are a good place to start. They can be very costly depending on the material and style chosen. Shopping around the different large hardware centers and even online can make a big difference. Buying pre-fabricated cabinetry and hanging them personally can be quite inexpensive as far as total price goes but might not lend the finished kitchen that polished professional look in the end. Then there is the hardware to consider. The hinges, handles and knobs that come in hundreds of different types and styles are something that the home owner needs to look at in conjunction with cabinets and drawers.

The countertops are arguably the main focus in a kitchen. They make the bold first impression upon entering the room. Like cabinets there are quite a few style and types to choose from. Formica, ceramic, tile, stainless steel are all good options. What appears to be most popular of late is either marble or granite. Granite is the second hardest substance known to man after diamonds. It is almost impossible to chip, scar or damage. Marble on the other hand is still quite hard, though not as hard as granite. Marble’s selling point is its finish, the fact that it can really take a polish. It also lends a quiet elegance and class to a kitchen.

There are so many way to upgrade and remodel a kitchen and even more factors to take into consideration. Do the research, talk to professionals, plan carefully and getting a good return on your investment is more than possible.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting Ideas

Kitchen cabinets over the years can take some real abuse, especially if a family has been raised in the house. There are times that it becomes obvious that the kitchen cupboards need some serious attention. These are also often the times when the family finances refuse to allow any serious attention to the kitchen cabinets. Painting the cabinets may well be a viable solution. The savings compared to replacing or even remodeling the cabinets is virtually incredible. If the homeowner is a DIY inclined the savings can even be more.

In today’s market the cost of replacing the cabinetry in even a small kitchen can easily creep up into the $5000 range, that’s minus installation or new countertops. Worse yet the newly purchased cabinets may lack the quality of those that are being replaced. Taking a step backwards was not on the remodeling agenda. Re-facing the existing cabinets and drawers, the process of veneering, can reach upwards of $3500 alone. Now all the painting and prep materials, like sandpaper, primer, paint and brushes will run the homeowner in the neighborhood of $200 to $250. Those are beyond incredible savings. If the services of a professional painter are sought out another $1000 can be added to the cost. A little work on the part of the homeowner saves thousands of dollars.

Note that even painting the kitchen cabinets cannot help much if there is a poor kitchen design or structural flaws in the cabinetry itself. Low cost cabinetry in the first place tends to deteriorate over time, it loses some of its structural integrity and no amount of paint can fix that. Thin sides and back on older cabinets are usually veneered with a vinyl paper. This vinyl paper can and will peel over time. Painting over it is not really an option and peeling it off is not much better. If the kitchen cabinets happened to be manufactured out of particle board and surfaced with a veneer of any sort then no amount of painting will bring them back to life.

When there are true structural problems like cracking, or loose railings and hardware that defy reattaching then replacing the cabinetry altogether may well be the only option. If the damage consists of only minor little scratches or nicks then painting can be the way to go. In addition to the fresh coat on the cabinetry brand new hardware like hinges, latches, handles and knobs, can really offer a new fresh look.
